Call of Duty: World at War – Review

February 24th, 2009

Before you even start reading this review, buy the game! In my opinion, the best FPS since Counter-Strike.

Call of Duty: World at War -- The first game I bought since I picked up a new Xbox. As you can see at my gamercard I only have 60 points. And I got 45 of them playing Cod 5. I’ve played the offline mode for about two hours. A good game indeed, but the online mode is what makes the game interesting.

What drives you throughout the game (besides that it’s a fun game!) is the XP hunt. You collect XP by killing you opponents, winning matches and completing challenges. There are 65 levels and after you reach 65 you have the option to prestige. If you choose to prestige, you’ll be back at level 1 -- but with the prestige level 1 instead of 0 that you start on. There are 10 prestige levels to gain. So basically 650 levels. Happy hunting…

Two online modes…
There are two online modes -- core and hardcore. In the core mode you have a map and can also see the cross hair. And you need to shoot your opponents with more bullets to kill them and vise versa. In hardcore you only see the map if someone called a reconplane (if you shoot three ppl without dying you get a reconplane) and never displays the cross hair. Play core for about 30 levels and then go hardcore. The core mode is more intense and ppl just run around like idiots and shoot like crazy. The respawn time is 0 on core and 5-15 seconds on hardcore, depending on how you got shoot.

There are several match modes to play -- Team Death Match, Free for All, Capture the Flag, Search and Destroy etc. Try em and find your favorite. I play Free for All when I want to Exp a weapon (we’ll get to that later) and Team Death Match when I play with friends. If you want XP fast, you should play Search and Destroy.

XP and Leveling…
Kill your opponents, and don’t get killed. Be the best on every round. That’s the key!
If you want fast XP, this is what you do: Start playing on core, use the SMG Thompson. Play until your at level 4, here you get the Class Option. Now you can create your own classes, from the beginning you get five classes. Now you can create five classes with your favorite weapons, sidearms, grenades, perks etc. Now create a class, name it “WILLIAMs v01 Way” :) Choose the Thompson with the Perk “Stopping power” and Perk “Steady Aim”. At level 10 you get a new SMG -- the MP40, remove the Thompson and choose the MP40. Besides the perks, you also get upgrades for your weapons. The last thing you get for your new friend the MP40 is dual mags. Play until you get it. And just kill away! You’ll be at level 65 before you know it.

Yeah, you can get upgrades for you weapons. For eg. shoot 25 opponents with your MP40 and you’ll get the first upgrade, shoot another 50 and you’ll get the next one etc. There are 3 to 4 upgrades per weapon. And for every upgrade you’ll also get XP.

Challenges…
Besides killing, winning matches and XPing weapons there is also the Challenges. You’ll get more challenges as you level up. The first challenges you get is the Boot Camp Challenges. For eg. Kill 10 opponents with a grenade, survive a fall from 25 feet, knife 10 opponents etc. When you complete a challenge you get from 50-1000 XP. The last challenges you get is Elite. Here you have some really groovy once. For eg. kill an opponent, pick up his weapon and kill him with his own bullets, stab an opponent in the back of the head or shoot through a wall using the perk deep impact and kill 2 opponents with a sniper rifle etc. There are many XP to collect with the challenges so just complete them one by one.

Call of Duty: World at War -- Lots of action and lots of fun. Buy it today!

And… if you start playing -- Add me “WILLIAM v01″ to your buddielist and join the war!
