CMS (Content management system) Guide

February 5th, 2009

Since I tried almost every CMS there is. I thought I’d give you some tips if you’re a CMS rookie. A very basic and simple guide and according to what I feel is the easyest and best way to go. This is not a “how to” more of a “why don’t you try this” guide.

Why CMS?
Yeah, that’s the kicker! Once you made a site – All the design and edited it with lots of content, and you feel (if you’re like me) that it’s time to make a new design cuz you got bored of the old one. Now if you have it the oldschool way, you have to remake the hole site, tables, content, images, vids etc. And paste it into your new design. I know, I used to do it. And it takes for ever. But – If you have it in CMS, just remake the template and activate it – and your done! All the posts, texts and stuff is still there. This is why I started with CMS in the first place. But also you have tons of plugins and widgets that you can download and just activate. You don’t have to be ASP genius. It’s simple, that’s it. And best of all – FREE!

Witch CMS shall I use?
- Wordpress
- Joomla
- Website Baker

Why one of these three?
Wordpress and Joomla are the most used once. You have thousands of themes and add-on’s, guides and FAQ’s. And Website Baker cuz it’s sooo simple to use.

Wordpress
This is my personal favorite. This site, version 4, is made in WP. It’s more of a blogg CMS then say a business site. But you can build it however you want. My previous versions 1, 2 and 3 were also WP. Since I blog, I’ll stick to WP until something better comes along.

Download WP now.

Joomla
Joomla is the most complex CMS. Can’t tell you that much about it. I only made one site with Joomla. But if you wanna build a big complex site with high security and advanced plugins and widgets. Use Joomla. This is not for beginners. Who uses Joomla? Well, for example: United Nations, L.A. Weekly, Harvard University.

Download Joomla now.

Website Baker
It doesn’t get easier than this. Website baker is more limited then WP and Joomla. But if your are making a basic site with some text and images, this is the way to go. If you wanna edit a page, just login and edit. As easy as editing in MS Word.

Download Website Baker now.

If you have any questions about CMS, feel free to ask. Good luck!
